Midwifery Care at Southwell OB/GYN
Personal, experienced care when you need it most
Southwell’s certified nurse midwives care for women at every stage: from routine visits to pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. They take time to listen, answer questions, and make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your care, with the added support of a hospital-based medical team.
What Is a Certified Nurse Midwife?
A certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice provider with specialized training in women’s health, pregnancy, and childbirth.
Our midwives are nurse practitioners with advanced degrees who bring extensive experience in both women’s health and maternity care. They’re licensed to provide medical care and prescribe medications as part of your treatment — right here at Southwell.
Women's Health at Every Stage
Many patients choose midwives for ongoing care, not just during pregnancy. Our midwives provide a full range of women’s health services, including:
- Annual exams and routine gynecologic care
- Birth control and family planning
- Teen women’s health visits
- STI screening and problem visits
- Menopause care and hormone therapy
- Pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding support
Pregnancy, Labor & Delivery Care
Midwifery care is a more personal, supportive way to go through pregnancy and childbirth.
You’ll have time to ask questions, talk through your options, and understand what’s happening during every visit — from pregnancy to delivery and recovery.
Your midwife will support your preferences, including lower-intervention approaches when it’s safe, and make sure you still have access to everything the hospital offers, like epidurals and other treatments. They’ll care for you throughout your pregnancy and do their best to be there when you deliver.
A Team Approach to Safe Care
Your care is always supported by a full medical team.
Your midwife remains involved in your care and helps you understand what’s happening the whole way through. You will also meet physicians like Dr. Clifton so you feel comfortable with your full care team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose a midwife for my care?
Yes. You can request a certified nurse midwife when scheduling your appointment.
Will my midwife deliver my baby?
Midwives try to deliver as many of their own patients as possible, but availability depends on timing, call schedules, and labor. A midwife is always available at the hospital for routine deliveries.
Will a doctor be there when I deliver?
Not always for low-risk deliveries. However, an OB/GYN is always available in-house if needed.
What if my pregnancy becomes high risk?
Your midwife will work closely with the OB/GYN team. If needed, care may be co-managed or transitioned to a physician.
Can I still have an epidural or other interventions?
Yes. You will have access to the full range of hospital-based options.
Do midwives provide home births?
No. All deliveries are hospital-based.
Do midwives only care for pregnancy?
No. They provide women’s health care across all stages of life, including annual exams, birth control, and menopause care.
